Photos are the essence of what scrapbooking is all about. If it wasn't for those old boxes of photographs hiding in the cupboard, this craft would never have grown into what it is today.
As scrapbookers we are always on the hunt for the latest scrapbooking technique, idea or inspiration. Do you ever stop to learn how to take better photos to use in your albums? This article is designed to do just that. Teach you how to capture those candid moments, record those precious memories and enjoy the feelings of confidence when you know you are capable of taking the most amazing photographs.
Lets explore 'Candid Photographs'.
Candid photographs of children can be the most gorgeous ones of all. These are the memories of moments which need recording. How do you capture those candid shots without it looking like just another snapshot?
1. Have your camera ready. This may sound basic, but so important. Keep you camera ready to go. If you have to search for new batteries or can't find it when you are heading out to the park, you aren't going to get those great photos. When you are out you need to keep it at the ready as well. Those candid moments just happen and you have to be ready to shoot at a moments notice.
2. Be thinking of photos. As you are playing at the park or wherever you are, keep looking and thinking what would make a great photo. Look at the action, children, backgrounds and work out a great shot in your mind. Then when it all comes together grab your camera and shoot.
3. Capture unusual poses. Think of photographing people from behind, above or below. Someone lying down or bending over.
4. Create a natural pose. Say something funny just as you are about to shoot to capture those laughs. Or call out to someone who is facing the other way. As they turn to look at you be ready to capture the natural face expression.
5. Use your zoom. When people know there is a camera pointed at them it is very hard to act natural. So find a quiet place where you won't be noticed and zoom in on the action. The best candid photos are taken when the subjects don't realize it.
6. Give your subjects an activity to do. Try giving children a bottle of bubbles and capture them intent with concentration as they blow. Once people are immersed in an activity they will often forget all about you and your camera.
7. Take photos without thought. Don't get caught up in getting everything just right. Sometimes you need to just take the photo or else you will miss the action. This is the beauty of digital cameras. If you take 20 photos to get one 'wow' photo, no one need ever know!
Outdoors
Taking great photos is an important skill for all scrapbookers. The quality of the photo will nearly always dictate the quality of the final scrapbook page. This is one skill you will really enjoy getting better at. Imagine having albums full of those absolutely amazing photographs. Learn how to take great photos and you can. Photographs are often taken outside so here are 7 tips for making your outdoor pictures look great.
1. Watch for shadows. Be aware of those shadows, especially on your subjects faces. It is worth taking an extra look before shooting to check this out. Shadows around the eyes is rather unflattering. A lot of shadows throughout the photo can make it hard to focus on the subject.
2. Use Color. Color is usually in abundance outdoors so use it to best advantage. Think of taking photos of your children in, around, or behind a garden of bright colored flowers. You could also go to the opposite end of the spectrum and make the natural brown coloring a feature.
3. Use the flash. Even if you are outdoors in reasonably bright light having a fill in flash is sometimes effective. It can be used to brighten the subjects face especially when there is a bright background. This can also take out shadows in the faces.
4. Capture action. Outdoors often means action is happening. Use this is a positive and capture the action. The kids on a swing or riding the bike. Cooking the BBQ or whatever is happening capture it.
5. Make formal poses natural. Outdoors just asks for people to be natural so when taking the family portrait at the family reunion (or any posed photo) get natural poses. Maybe ask a couple of the people to jump up just before you shoot. Get everyone laughing unexpectedly. Throw a beach ball into the midst. Whatever your imagination comes up with usually works here. This often creates the most fun, memory photos rather than a still portrait with people looking unnatural.
6. Focus attention on the subject. As you frame your shot, carefully look at the background and foreground. Make sure your subject is the focal attention. Re-frame the shot, zoom in or out, focus on the subject (not the background) or move the location to make it work.
7. Choose a background. Outdoors provides an endless array of backgrounds. Look for something unusual for a creative effect. Remember that a different background doesn't have to mean taking the attention away from the subject. Think of things like a fence, colorful flowers, sky, water etc.
Enjoy the time spent together in the outdoors as you practice and perfect your photography skills.
